My Sunbeams

When we first got the call to teach in the primary, I was nervous, and scared that we'd get the dreaded "Sunbeam" call. Well lo and behold we were called to teach the second class of Sunbeams... Yes our primary is huge, we have 2 classes of sunbeams. When we first started the year we had 8 sunbeams in our class and so did the other class. We first walked into our class I thought for sure they were gonna kill us. And I really started to dread Sundays, but still tried to find a way to make the kid's adjustment from Nursery to Sunbeams a tad easier. But every Sunday I'd come home ready to pull my hair out. And then a couple weeks ago the primary chorister thanked us for having such great and reverent Sunbeams. At first I wanted to laugh at her, but then I looked at my Sunbeams. They were all sitting in their chairs facing front with their arms folded. And they stay that way all through opening exercises and singing time. And for the most part they do really well in class too. I realized, with Danny there and both of us showing appreciation to the kids when they're reverent, makes them really want to be reverent. That and they love getting stickers haha! We show by example how to be reverent in primary, and they're getting it. We no longer have to take several of the kids into the hall way one at a time because they're misbehaving, we still have occasionally to take one kid but those time are becoming more rare each and every Sunday. We've even had parents comment on how reverent they are when they come to pick up their kids. Our Sunbeams know they can not leave unless they are in their chairs with their arms folded. I am so appreciative of our Sunbeams, and I'm very grateful for their parents who are supportive of what Danny and I do each and every Sunday. I am so proud of my Sunbeams for being the most well behaved and reverent class in the Junior Primary. And I'm not just saying that because I'm biased!

  1. I have to give you major props. It has got to be hard trying to get that many kids sitting still. It's not an easy age, I go crazy with my two and three year old at home. I can't imagine teaching eight of them for two hours. You should pat yourself on the back, or eat a brownie!

  2. As the parent of many past Sunbeams and one present Sunbeam (Landon), I am incredibly grateful for Sunbeam teachers! I can try to teach reverence at home, but it really only matters at the Church. I know we have great teachers when we go from tearful goodbyes to 'see ya later, Mom!' :D

  3. Jeremy and I got called to teach the sunbeams a while back...just it was the 4th class of Sunbeams! Yeah, you think your primary is huge? Lol. Try having four classes of Sunbeams, each with 10-12 kids. Ours had 10 on a regular basis. I can tell you, it was a trial. I wish I had enjoyed it while I taught, though, because I sometimes miss it now. I'm glad you realized the enjoyment of it while you're still teaching! That's much better than me. =)
